Zafu are round cushions used for zazen (seated meditation) in Zen Buddhism. Using a zafu for meditation helps you sit on the floor in a position that allows you to be properly aligned for meditation practice. Why make zafu? Satsuki (we call her May-san), originally from Amami Oshima, Japan, supported her family in California by making zafu that she sold at Shambala Books in Berkeley. 35 years later, she has returned to the craft for this limited run of cushions. Only 20 available! These are completely unique handmade cushions filled with 100% organic kapok, which helps them retain their shape better than cotton, but gives them a softer feel than cushions filled with buckwheat. May selected denim and batik for their pragmatic but imaginative style, and there are also a few that feature hand-dyed indigo from Kyoto (please add $5 for this style). Please enjoy May's handmade zafu to aid you in your meditation practice, or just to sit comfortably on the floor!
